Alang Shipbreaking Yard, located near Bhavnagar on the coast of the Gulf of Khambhat in Gujarat, is the world’s largest ship recycling facility and plays a vital role in India’s maritime and recycling industries. Established in 1983, Alang was chosen for its long, flat shoreline and strong tidal range, which make it ideal for the beaching method of shipbreaking, where end-of-life ships such as oil tankers, cargo vessels, and container ships are driven ashore and dismantled piece by piece. The recovered steel and machinery are recycled and reused, supplying raw materials for furnace, rolling mills and manufacturing industries across the country. Alang provides employment to thousands of workers and directly and indirectly supports the economy of the Bhavnagar district while contributing significantly to India’s supply of recycled steel. Today, the shipbreaking yard stands as an important industrial hub, symbolizing large-scale recycling, economic activity, and India’s role in the global ship recycling industry.
